Summer Lectures

As is traditional with our Group the May lecture was combined with the AGM. A senior manager from the National Trust in our area is invited to attend the meeting and receive our annual donation to NT properties and projects. In return he is asked to speak after the refreshment break. This year we enjoyed an entertaining and interesting talk by Andrew Wright, NT Countryside Manager for Surrey Hills East. Andrew updated us on many of our local countryside properties including Reigate Fort and Limpsfield Common.

In June we welcomed Jacqueline Clemson from the Royal Collection Trust who gave a very interesting talk about her time working at Windsor Castle. It was fascinating to learn that the Queen often had famous guests for weekends at the Castle. One of the more interesting was Daniel Craig who stayed just after the London Olympics. Jackie brought along and displayed many of her personal gifts from the Queen. Unfortunately this lecture coincided with one of the hottest evenings of the year and attendance figures were rather disappointing.

July brought a change of pace and a talk about the lady drivers who raced at Brooklands during its heyday of  the 1920s and 1930s. The talk was titled “ Fast Track Fast Women “ and was presented by Brooklands Trust Administrator Tim Morris. The Brooklands Circuit was built by Hugh Locke King in 1907 but it was his wife Ethel who pushed him to complete the project when money was running short and who drove their car during the opening ceremony. She also raced in 1908 at a time when lady drivers had not been accepted on the roads let alone a racing circuit!! Among the many ladies mentioned by Tim was Kay Petre who combined glamour with speed. Less than 5 feet tall Kaye could handle the huge cars of the time with wooden blocks on the pedals so that her legs could reach.

The lecture programme continues on September 27th with a talk about the Inns of Court in London given by Blue Badge Guide Ian Bevan.
